More water is used during Spring and Summer months due to outdoor water usage such as irrigation systems. Irrigation systems can use up to 50 gallons of water per minute. This will increase water usage, which will increase water bills. There are simple ways to reduce outdoor watering while still maintaining your landscape:

*Water your landscape in the early morning or late evening. Ground is most receptive to water due to evaporation and low wind. Be sure to check your plants for signs of stress such as brown edges or wilting leaves.

*Adjust sprinkler system heads so they are not directed at pavement

*Group plants with similar water needs together and in the proper location. Shade-loving plants require more water when planted in full sun.

*Water deeply once a week - frequent watering encourages shallow root growth.

*Use a rain barrel or rain gauge for irrigation - most plants need approx. 1 inch of water per week including rainfall.

*Cap off irrigation to shrub beds - shrubs rarely need supplemental irrigation.
